EXALTED RULER’S MESSAGE:
Greetings Members,

As we enter June, we look forward to Flag Day. This year the Lodge will be hosting the event on June 12th as a City wide effort to
promote the day. This event will be held in conjunction with the many Veterans Organizations within the City, and will bring honor to
the Day, in that we will be celebrating it with the World War 2, the VFW, the American Legion, as well as the Veterans
Administration.  A lot of effort went into organizing this, and I would like to thank the Veterans Council of Northampton, and Elk
member, Gerry Clark for all of his time that he dedicated to this event, with all the other organizations. It will be at 3:00 PM on
Sunday, June 12 at the Lodge, hope to see you there.

I would also like to honor the May Elk of the Month, John Kingsey for his very active role in the VA.  I thank you John on behalf of
the Lodge for a job well done..

Cruise Night will be starting up again with fun for all on June 9, and if you have attended in the past, you know what a great time it
is, if not, come on down on a Thursday night and see for yourself. The committee under the guidance of Ed Cooper, Chairperson,
works hard to insure enjoyment for everyone.

Fraternally,

John Glenowicz, PER
Exalted Ruler
Secretaries Message:
May was a busy month with the Mother’s Day Brunch and the Memorial Day Parade.  It has been very busy for me because
Grand Lodge is transferring all lodges to the CLMS2 system which has not been easy so far.
If you do not hold a green card to access the lodge then you have not paid your dues.  To date we have 93 members who have
not paid, please send in your payment today.
Indoctrination of new members will be June 14th at 7:00 and initiation of new members will be at our regular meeting on June
21st.  Everyone is invited to attend, please sign up for dinner at 6:00.
Cruise night begins this month along with picnics, Father’s Day and many more activities.  I hope everyone stops by to enjoy
some of them.  I know people are busy with getting their yards in order and graduation parties and picnics.  Enjoy the summer.
Respectfully submitted,
Sylvia Zakrzewski, Secretary
Buck-A-Week:
The following people were the lucky winners at the Buck-A-Week biannual drawing that was held on April 15, 2010.
Congratulations to them and a special thanks to all the kitchen crew who helped in so many ways to make the dinner another
huge success.  The meal was great and all the workers deserve another round of applause.
Lou Poirer, Melissa Stanley, Peg Omasta, Bernie Bachand, Gail Moore, Eleanor Bart, Jan Hutchins, Norm Cloutier, Phil Cevello,
Colleen Basile, John Zaikowski, Carol Majkowski, Manny Kolemba.

Thanks Again!

Flag day ceremonies will be held June 12th at the lodge at
3:00 P.M. in conjunction with the Northampton Veterans
council, Veterans of Foreign Wars 8006, and the American
Legion Post 28, and our boys scouts troop 109 form
Florence. American flags will be collected for retirement at
this time. The public is invited and encouraged to attend. We
will also have the grill going to feed the participants and
attendee's.
The annual barbecue for the Veterans at the V.A. is being

Changes to Friday Night Dinners:

In order to cover costs but also keep things affordable, the price
of the Friday night dinners has increased.  The cost has gone
from $10 per plate to $11 per plate.

Also a reminder that during the months of July & August we will
not be serving dinners on Friday nights.  The final meal of the
season will be served on Friday June 24th.  Dinners will resume
again in the fall on Friday September 9th.

We found that peoples travel plans during the summer months,
as well as more free time for socializing during the warm weather
caused a sharp drop off in the number of meals sold.  We would
also like to show our appreciation to the entire group of kitchen
volunteers by giving them more time with their family and friends
during this beautiful time of the year.  See you in September!
2011 State Association Charity Drawing:
Just a reminder, if you haven’t returned your 2011 Charity
Drawing tickets, time is running out!  The drawing will be held
on June 12th.  If you haven’t mailed them back in the
envelope that was provide, you can still turn them in at our
lodge and they will be brought to the Elks State Convention
June 11th & 12.
Remember “Charity is the greatest of virtues”

                                 VETERANS COUNCIL OF NORTHAMPTON
TO HOST JUNE 12 CEREMONY TO HONOR U.S. FLAG
                                              **PUBLIC IS INVITED**
NORTHAMPTON -- The Veterans Council of Northampton will honor the nation's flag at a ceremony Sunday, June 12 at 3 p.m. at
the Elks Lodge 997, 17 Spring St., Florence.
American flags at the Sunday ceremony will be properly retired in commemoration of National Flag Day, on June 14.
The public is invited and encouraged to attend. The Sunday ceremony was scheduled to best accommodate families and
encourage as many young people to attend, said Gerry Clark, president of the Veteran’s Council of Northampton. The Veteran’s
Council is organizing the event.
"We hope to remind city residents, especially young people, of what our flag symbolizes and why we honor the flag not just on
Flag Day but on every day of the year," said Charles Coleman, a council member and chairman of the event. Coleman said the
event is the first Veterans Council consolidated event scheduled in Northampton.
Participating in the ceremony of retiring the flags are Veterans Council of Northampton, members from the Elks Lodge 997,
Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8006, and American Legion Post 28.
The ceremony will also include Boy Scouts from Troop 109 in Florence who will present flags from different eras of American
history during the ceremony.  A narrative history of each flag will then be read.
The ceremony will also feature remarks by Gerry Clark, Veterans Council president; a proclamation will be read.
The council encourages residents to bring old, worn flags to the American Legion Post 28, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post
8006, or the Elks Lodge 997 where they will be collected for the retirement ceremony.
A flag retirement site will be a circular area with a fire pit in the middle to conform to the United States Flag Code, which states:
"The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way,
preferably by burning."
Following the ceremony, refreshments will be served.
For more information about the June 12 ceremony, contact Norbert Rieke, Veterans Council secretary, at (413) 587-1299.

needed and welcomed.  There are sign up sheets on the bulletin board in the member’s lounge at the lodge.
Cruise Night:
It is with great pleasure that I announce the winners of the 2011 Northampton Elks 997 Cruise Night Automotive Excellence
Award.   The award is presented to the top student in the Smith Vocational Auto Repair Technology Dept. and the Auto Body
Repair Technology Dept.  They are recommended by their respective Department’s faculty to recognize the student’s academic
achievements, positive attitude and aptitude in their respective vocational studies. Each student will be given the opportunity to
purchase $1000.00 of Snap On tools which will be paid for by our Lodge through funds generated by our Cruise Nights events.
The winning students this year are Daniel Blair of Northampton and Jesse Lapinski of Williamsburg.
We would like to thank the members of the business community who have chosen to support our Lodge by becoming Cruise Night
sponsors.  As of May 21 we have received more than $3000.00 in sponsorship donations.  These donations help offset our
startup expenses and help fund the awards to the Smith Vocational students.  The sponsors for the month of June are; Leeds
Mart, Pioneer Landscapes Inc., Easthampton Savings Bank, Duffy Front End Service, Northampton Cooperative Bank, Foster
Farrar Co., Seth Mias Catering, Cichy’s Garage and NAPA Auto Parts. Thank you all.
The first “Cruise” is June 9.  Come out and have a burger, a beverage and enjoy the cars ranging from museum quality antiques
to” rolling works of art” hot rods. For those 500 or so members who have forgotten where the Lodge is located, take the
opportunity to join us and a bunch of really great folks on a summer evening. We’ll be there every Thursday evening, weather
permitting, until Sept. 15. Help support our Lodge.
